Our trip….the series that answers the most asked questions.
The second installment that answers the question : how did we do it?
If what you want to know is how did we manage the logistics of leaving Sydney, the simple answer is we had a master list with our initials against various tasks and we just kept ticking stuff off (inc selling the house and all that goes with that), adding new tasks and more ticking off. This process was surprisingly cathartic as we threw out everything that didn’t warrant paying to store. We filled trailer loads, gave to charity and passed stuff along. It just kept feeling lighter and lighter until we were down to us and seven suitcases. More on the ’less is more’ theme to come!
If you’re a planning nut and are curious about how we mapped out and organised the trip, we broke that down into the next 6 weeks at a time. We left Sydney with the first three months nailed down but nothing else. We really wanted to be able to ‘make it up’ as went along. We knew we had a base in Portugal to come and go from and that we would have 4-6 week trips on the road. Of course, when you’re travelling with three kids, you need to know where you’re going to sleep at night! We would plot this out in chunks in advance as we were planning each ‘roadtrip’. The rest we let fall into place. Plenty of letting it all just happen, figuring out what we wanted to do with not much more than a few hours or days’ notice.
More often than not however, the greater curiosity about ‘how’ we did our trip has been around how we funded it. Did Paul leave his job? How do you just walk away from ‘life’ and take that kind of time away?
You may have already read some of my scribblings about choices. I am a signed up and wholehearted believer that everything is a choice. We made the choice to hoist the anchor on some of our savings to make this experience happen.
In addition to using some savings we have a residual income that shows up every week from my freedom based, wellness centred network marketing business. I started building that business 7 years ago and can hand on heart say it has been a game changer.
Today I collaborate with an incredible team of like-minded people all over the world who share an ethos that we call ‘heart centred network marketing.’ Together, we are making a difference in the lives of others so that they can live their lives on their terms. That’s freedom right there!
Having that income show up every week equals freedom to me. Having it show up while we were spending quality time with our kids and sharing that extraordinary experience of being together for 15 months was priceless. Learning that ‘work’ can be wholeheartedly collaborative, joyful, challenging, good for my soul and has shown me the way to my freedom has changed me like I would have never imagined.
I adore these words from Kate Northrup, author of ‘Money – A Love Story’
“Divorcing your money from the amount of hours you can spend making it, is one of the most critical steps for creating the ultimate luxury in your life – choice.” - Kate Northrup
I’m curious – what moves have you made on getting closer to your definition of freedom?
Please share in the comments – there's every chance you will inspire someone to take a step toward their freedom!
"What I now know to be true is that the key to creating freedom is accessing choice and the way to create more choices is to have more of the resources that allow choice, namely time and money."
